Beloved Enemy – Chapters 1-9 Summaries

Chapter 1

• The chapter starts with GuQingPei’s first day on the job as the newly hired Director by YuanLiJiang for one of his newly acquired companies.
• The company’s employees are in awe of GuQingPei.
• GuQingPei familiarizes himself with the opulent office he is given.
• Background is provided of GuQingPei’s past, where he had worked for the government and how he wanted to do something more challenging.
• We are told of how GuQingPei met YuanLiJiang. How YuanLiJiang admires GuQingPei’s competency and talent and ultimately ends up hiring him.
• GuQingPei goes into the chairman’s office to meet YuanLiJiang.
• YuanLiJiang also brought his son, YuanYang along with him.
• GuQingPei is introduced to YuanYang.
• GuQingPei is aware of YuanYang’s troublesome background.
• YuanYang is naturally angry and unwilling at having been been forced by his dad to come to this place and looks coldly at GuQingPei the entire time.
• GuQingPei guessed YuanLiJiang’s intent in bringing YuanYang and he’s right, YuanLiJiang passes YuanYang to GuQingPei so he could take YuanYang under his wings and guide him.
• GuQingPei and YuanYang’s meeting could be said as a bit tensed with “mutual dislike.”
• GuQingPei reluctantly accepts to be YuanYang’s mentor. YuanYang reluctantly ends up working for GuQingPei.
• GuQingPei is given authority by YuanLiJiang to teach/guide YuanYang with whatever method he deems fitting.
• Overall, background is provided of GuQingPei, YuanYang, YuanLiJiang, as well as the Yuan Family.

 

Chapter 2

• GuQingPei, YuanLiJiang and YuanYang (unwillingly) sit down and talks about business.
• YuanLiJiang urges YuanYang to pay attention to their business talk and learn.
• YuanYang continues to look at GuQingPei condescendingly and treats him coldly.
• GuQingPei could already sense that it would be impossible to get along with YuanYang.
• GuQingPei tries to think of ways he could tame YuanYang.
• He decides to be kind and try to reason with him. If all else fails, he’ll convincingly make YuanYang hit him to give him the valid reason to get rid of him (YuanYang).
• YuanYang asks for GuQingPei’s age because GuQingPei seems to be acting all high and might toward him.
• YuanLiJiang scolds at YuanYang for not having any manners.
• YuanLiJiang leaves.
• GuQingPei and YuanYang have a talk in his office; both sides obviously dislike each but are forced into this situation of mentor/mentee.
• GuQingPei ask YuanYang about his career path and tries to understand him so that he could better guide him.
• YuanYang is pissed. He didn’t have any interest in business nor wanted to learn.
• GuQingPei compares the similarities between army battle life and running a business.

 

Chapter 3

• GuQingPei asked YuanYang to bring a resume.
• GuQingPei tells YuanYang that his attire is inappropriate for office setting.
• GuQingPei asks YuanYang to follow him around the company to get familiarize but YuanYang refuses to even move.
• YuanYang tries to convince GuQingPei to cooperate with him. By this, he meant, each minding their own business, leaving each other alone.
• GuQingPei refuses saying that YuanLiJiang is not stupid and would know.
• He asks that YuanYang address him by his title, Director Gu.
• YuanYang is pissed and storms out and leaves.
• GuQingPei and YuanYang had a physical altercation where GuQingPei grabs his shoulders but ends up being held down by YuanYang.
• GuQingPei feels disgraced on his first day appointed as Director.
• GuQingPei calls YuanLiJiang to inform him of YuanYang leaving.
• YuanYang storms back into the office and GuQingPei tells him to “know his place.”
• GuQingPei treats YuanYang to lunch. YuanYang invites a bunch of his hooligan soldier friends to join with a purpose in mind.

 

Chapter 4

• YuanYang’s group of hooligan soldier friends tries to get GuQingPei drunk, but GuQingPei knows of YuanYang’s scheme and refuses to fall into this trap by saying that he can’t drink.
• GuQingPei refuses to drink.
• Their (GuQingPei and YuanYang) opposing attitude towards each other intensifies.
• After YuanYang’s plan failed, they both went back to work after lunch.
• GuQingPei introduces YuanYang as his driver and assistant to the secretary.
• Again, YuanYang is furious and swears at him.
• GuQingPei’s office has a bathroom and a breakroom with a bed that he could use to take naps.
• GuQingPei decides to take a shower and changes his clothes.
• YuanYang being shocked that he’s been resigned as a driver and assistant, grabs onto GuQingPei’s collar and pops a few buttons on GuQingPei’s shirt which led to another brief physical altercation.

 

Chapter 5

• After fixing his clothes, GuQingPei asks YuanYang what he else could do if not be his assistant and driver.
• YuanYang asks that GuQingPei completely ignores him but GuQingPei refuses.
• GuQingPei takes YuanYang to the office meeting he had the secretary set up.
• YuanYang naturally sits as far away from GuQingPei as possible.
• GuQingPei gave a long speech and introduces himself as the company’s new director to the employees and tries to motivate them.
• GuQingPei tries to establish a new culture in the workplace with new work standards and policies through a new HR management system, especially with regards to punctuality and revamping the existing relaxed working mentality.
• GuQingPei tries to talk YuanYang into feeling a sense of accomplishment in future developments of such company but YuanYang wasn’t having any of it.
• He wanted GuQingPei to leave him alone.
• YuanYang wanted to go home to sleep. He once again asked GuQingPei to leave him alone and let him go but GuQingPei refuses.
• GuQingPei and YuanYang got into in a verbal altercation where YuanYang ends up swearing at GuQingPei and kicking a chair.
• Both see this situation they in as a challenge to each other, to see who will concede first.

 

Chapter 6

• YuanYang is situated in the cubicle outside the director’s office.
• GuQingPei actually finds YuanYang attractive but obviously with problems.
• YuanYang barges in to GuQingPei office and intends to nap on his couch.
• GuQingPei tells him to nap in his break room if he must so YuanYang goes into this break room.
• GuQingPei tries to think of ways to tame YuanYang.
• YuanLiJiang calls GuQingPei. GuQingPei asserts him that YuanYang is mentorable but innately finds YuanYang to be extremely stubborn and unreasonable.
• GuQingPei advises YuanLiJiang to cutoff YuanYang’s finances.
• YuanLiJiang was unwilling but did so anyway.
• Meanwhile YuanYang is sleeping soundly in his break room wearing just his underwear.
• GuQingPei awakens him and tries to grab the blankets and once again, they end up in a physical altercation where YuanYang pushes GuQingPei onto the bed and restrains him.
• Then another episode of taunting, mocking war of words where both refuses to back off of each other.
• After all that, GuQingPei asked YuanYang to drive him home after work. More mocking and bickering between the two.
• YuanYang is also thinking of ways to bring GuQingPei under his control. His plan is to tolerate GuQingPei for the time being until he can catch him off guard.

 

Chapter 7

• YuanYang reluctantly proceeds to drive GuQingPei home in his hummer after work.
• GuQingPei invites YuanYang for dinner but is refused. He instead ask YuanYang to drive him to a mall so that YuanYang could get appropriate office attire.
• YuanYang refused but GuQingPei insisted that he sees YuanYang gets his office attire.
• Both challenge each other with words more taunting, mocking words again, but still YuanYang drove them to a mall.
• Both YuanYang and GuQingPei bought a few new outfits.
• GuQingPei sees YuanYang as an immature kid and he himself as his uncle, which naturally infuriates YuanYang even more.
• GuQingPei again invites YuanYang to dinner but YuanYang rejects so GuQingPei just orders YuanYang to take him home, which YuanYang did so promptly. He also reminded YuanYang to come pick him up for work the next morning.
• GuQingPei orders YuanYang to take the stuff he bought up to his house. Of course, YuanYang is naturally enraged being ordered around like a maid.
• YuanYang sees GuQingPei’s house and finds out that he is divorced.
• GuQingPei invites him for a meal in his home but YuanYang refuses and leaves.

 

Chapter 8

• Next morning, GuQingPei comes down his house to find YuanYang already waiting for him outside his car to take them to work very early in the morning.
• GuQingPei tries to advise YuanYang to go home more often after finding out that he didn’t live at home with the family.
• After getting to work, GuQingPei orders YuanYang to get him breakfast at the company’s canteen. YuanYang reluctantly complies.
• YuanYang’s friend, PengFang calls. YuanYang tells him about his pathetic situation, which made his friend crack up. But he also asked YuanYang if he wanted his help teach GuQingPei a “lesson.” YuanYang didn’t agree. They instead decided to meet up for dinner.
• YuanYang brings his breakfast to GuQingPei late and is given a lecture on the company’s rules and regulations. The company rules include dock pay for being late to work. Hence, YuanYang got his pay dock for clocking in late.
• GuQingPei is a bit worried about pushing YuanYang’s limit. He’s worried that it might ignite YuanYang’s wrath and cause him to react a certain extreme way.
• GuQingPei orders that YuanYang drive a company car (Audi).
• YuanYang drives GuQingPei home.
• ZhaoYuan invited GuQingPei to dinner meanwhile YuanYang and PengFang along with their group of friends were to meet for dinner.

 

Chapter 9

• GuQingPei meets his ex-wife ZhaoYuan (whom he affectionately calls YuanYuan) for dinner. They chat, he gifted her a pair of diamond studded earrings. His ex-wife obviously loved GuQingPei but is helpless since they both know GuQingPei is gay and doesn’t like women.
• GuQingPei and his ex-wife’s past are mentioned; how he was an introvert, how he didn’t know he was GAY; how they got married when he was 24. Then, how he came to realize their marriage issues stem from him being gay. Eventually, this led to their amicable divorce. GuQingPei blames himself and felt that he owed YuanYang for life for their divorce. They remain very good friends over the years.
• The ex-couple continues to chat about their lives.
• Meanwhile, YuanYang was also having dinner with his friends, getting teased by them on his current situation.
• After dinner with his friends, they decide to head to a bar at some specified location.
• While heading to the bar, YuanYang spots GuQingPei across the street and continues to stare at him.
• YuanYang was informed by his friends that the bar GuQingPei had gone into is a high-class gay bar.
• He smiles to himself satisfyingly, since he now has something to use against GuQingPei (as in finding out that he’s gay).
